Five players Jets could make run at during NFL free agency period
The NFL free agency period starts Monday: Here are five players the Jets could make pursue:
Another former Patriot should interest the Jets. The 27-year-old does not have a lot of wear and tear, with just 329 career carries. Lewis is a receiving threat as well as a runner, and would join Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire in the backfield.
Mixon ran 178 times for 626 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie. The Bengals will likely be looking for more bang for the buck per carry with Mixon taking on the starring role in his second season.
Allen helped himself at the NFL Scouting Combine this past week, displaying a pleasant but serious personality and, as expected, a howitzer right arm. Rosen flawlessly handled his media availability and showed off his accurate passing skills. Darnold did not really help his cause, as he opted not to throw at the combine, preferring to wait for his USC Pro Day on March 21, a session the Giants are sure to attend.
In 2015, NFL teams agreed to pay about $1 billion to settle brain-injury claims by nearly 5,000 ex players in the suit – and an unknown number of Patriots are among more than 15,000 former players who have registered for potential benefits as part of the settlement, the report said.
Riddell was not part of the settlement and continues to challenge the lawsuit.
Using the team’s rosters, the Globe compiled a list of Patriots who alleged they suffered brain damage.
They include Hall of Famers Nick Buoniconti, Raymond Clayborn, Steve Grogan and Babe Parilli.
Eight players, including Junior Seau and Mosi Tatupu, were diagnosed after their deaths with CTE, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive brain trauma.
Randall Gay, the youngest Patriot to play int he 2005 Super Bowl, retired in 2011 at 29 after suffering multiple concussions.
The 35-year-old Gay has graduated from law school and is a practicing attorney with his wife Desha, in Louisiana, but he said he has bouts of depression and other symptoms he believes were caused by football injuries.
Reports: Kurt Coleman agrees to three-year deal with Saints
Veteran safety Kurt Coleman has a new team to call home but is remaining in the NFC South.
Less than a week after being released by the Carolina Panthers, Coleman has agreed to a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints according to multiple reports.
You’ve got to take that role. I’m definitely that, Flacco said Tuesday after Rutgers’ third spring practice in Piscataway. No one’s picked me. I’m a walk-on from Western Michigan who didn’t play there as much as I’d like to. I like that role, I’ll take that role. If I’m the guy, I like the expectations. If I’m not the guy, I like to sneak up on you.
Flacco’s road to Rutgers has been a winding one. A three-sport star at Eastern, Flacco graduated with the third-most passing yards in South Jersey history, was a two-time First Team All-State baseball player drafted by the Phillies as a senior and also played basketball. But former Rutgers coach Kyle Flood and his staff did not recruit Flacco heavily when he was in high school.
Instead, Flacco went to to Western Michigan to play under former Rutgers assistant P.J. Fleck. after a grayshirt semester at Camden County College. He appeared in 13 games as a backup over two seasons there, rushing for 340 yards and two touchdowns and throwing for 188 yards and a score, before transferring to Rutgers last July and sitting out the 2017 season.
They wanted the financial flexibility going into free agency but expressed that they wanted me to return and will be in contact, Sherman said.
The Seahawks are near the bottom of the NFL in available cap space even after cutting Sherman, so he’d likely need to settle for a lot less money if he’s going to play in Seattle in 2018. Now he’s a free agent, and he can find out exactly what he’s worth on the open market.
After locking up their building block on offense by signing Derek Carr last offseason, it’s inevitable that the Oakland Raiders will make a similar move to secure their star pass-rusher. Mack is about to hit his fifth-year option campaign at $13.9 million. The Raiders could franchise him in 2019 for what likely will be a little more than $18 million, but if they don’t come to a deal with Mack this offseason, they’ll surely secure him next time around.
NFLPA president Eric Winston says he hasn’t heard desire for more offseason contact with teams from players
New Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has lamented the inability to contact and work with his players through the early stages of the offseason. Gruden has claimed that players used to come work with him because they’re unable to work with their teams due to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.
NFLPA president Eric Winston says that’s not the message he hears from his constituents on NFL rosters. On PFT Live with Mike Florio on Wednesday morning at the NFL Combine, Winston said he doesn’t have players coming to him telling him they want to see an extended offseason program.
Right, I’d tell them that there will be plenty of time for that, Winston said. Again, none of these players, whether they’re quarterbacks or younger players, at the end of the season ever say ‘yeah, man, if I just had a little bit more time early on, I would have got it.’ That’s the thing.
And if you’re a good coach and you know how to communicate and to teach, you’ll get that stuff in. And sometimes that means pairing down the playbook a little bit for a younger player. That’s OK. That actually means that you’ll probably have a more efficient offense or defense, but a lot of these guys, I think, want their cake and (to) eat it too and sometimes that just doesn’t work that way.
Like anything else, offseason contact between coaches and players can be a bargaining point in negotiations toward a new CBA when the time comes. The current CBA runs through the 2020 season.
It kind of frustrated me a little at first, but I understand it is what is, Vaccaro told Josh Katzenstein of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. I’m just going to enjoy the (free agency) process, and whatever happens, happens.
Vaccaro ended the 2017 season on injured reserve and had surgery to repair of core muscle injury. He said Wednesday that he feels better than he did at the start of the season, so health shouldn’t be a big concern when he begins the hunt for a new team in a couple of weeks.
If [the coach] asks me to be the backup I’m going to be the country’s best backup quarterback, Rosen said, when asked specifically about sitting and learning from Manning. I’m going to support my starter through everything. It might be a rough relationship at the beginning because they kinda see the dynamic, but I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win.
Baker Mayfield measures taller than he did at Senior Bowl
Roseman was more equivocal as to the question of whether Foles will be on the roster as of Week One, and Roseman was downright evasive as to the question of whether starter Carson Wentz will be healthy.
For the full interview with Roseman, who had the loose, relaxed, and at times humorous demeanor of a guy who went from internal exile to top of the mountain in only three years, check out the video.
One of the few companies that got it right on the issue was FedEx. On Monday, they proved it with a statement saying that while they oppose some of the NRA’s policy positions they refuse to change their discount policies because they value their customers for more than just their politics. (Meanwhile, both Apple and Amazon have remained silent about streaming NRA TV.)
Americans of all political stripes are exhausted by division. They long for unifiers, cultural touchstones that connect them with all types of people, instead of more reasons to see otherness in our neighbors, community and longtime friends.
Green Bay won three of the nine games Hundley started and two of the losses were shutouts at Lambeau Field as the team’s offense struggled to find any consistency with the backup quarterback at the helm. On Wednesday, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said that Hundley wasn’t ready for what he needed to be ready for and said the team as a whole should’ve been better prepared for life without Rodgers.
The coach added that the experience hasn’t shaken his belief in Hundley’s potential as a quarterback.
I believe in Brett Hundley, McCarthy said, via ESPN.com. I do fully recognize that he has a lot of football in front of him. He has a big upside. Our structure and our coaching staff, we need to make sure we maximize that, but we also need to learn from the other parts of the offense that we didn’t do as good as we would have liked, and we’ll learn from that platform. I do believe Brett has a big upside, and looking forward to getting back to work with him.
Hundley is entering the final year of his contract and McCarthy said the team can’t have enough competition at the position, so there may be some new faces in the mix as the offseason unfolds in Green Bay.
We wanted Joe. We wanted Joe and Renae and the Ingles family. We might have been criticized for the amount and the length of the contract, but we trusted him. We knew the type of person that he is, the type of leader that he is, how intelligent he is.
Ingles received significant interest from other teams, which was quite a contrast to the lonely lunch after being cut by the Clippers. But he never seriously considered leaving Utah, a second home for his family, which now includes 20-month-old twins Jacob and Milla. Their names are tattooed on the inside of the southpaw’s left wrist, with Renae’s on the outside.
Portland Trail Blazers: What’s holding CJ McCollum back from being an elite fantasy 2-guard? It sounds funny, but the answer could be a lack of 3-pointers. While McCollum is making more than 41.0 percent of his attempts from long range for a third straight season, he is attempting only 5.9 per game this season. That ranks behind players such as Carmelo Anthony, Austin Rivers and even DeMarcus Cousins (before the injury). To be an elite fantasy shooting guard, McCollum is going to have to find a way to start taking more 3s.
Sacramento Kings: When using Buddy Hield in your lineup, make sure you pay attention to whether the Kings are playing at home. Hield is shooting 46.1 percent in 27 home games this season compared to 41.7 percent in 32 road games. The 3-point shooting discrepancy is also staggering: 48.6 percent at home compared to 36.1 percent on the road.
The 2018 NFL Scouting Combine is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 27 and run through Monday, March 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. By the time the event arrives, NFL scouting staffs will have already completed evaluations on prospects. The NFL Combine serves as an opportunity for decision-makers to meet those prospects.
Sporting News last year detailed how team executives treat the NFL Combine. While the Underwear Olympics, which will be aired live on NFL Network from Friday through Monday, might be the highlights for viewers, teams will be more interested player interviews and physicals.
Feb. 23, 2017 — Chicago trades Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second-round pick to Oklahoma City for Anthony Morrow, Joffery Lauvergne and Cameron Payne
With their long-term future in flux, the Bulls made the perfectly sensible decision to move on from Gibson, who was a free agent at the end of the season, and McDermott, who wasn’t a part of their long-term plans. That part makes sense.
For Irving, it was a challenge. He obviously knew the importance of what was happening in his NBA life, but he did not want to let all that uncertainty bleed into the transformation of Uncle Drew into a movie star.
I tried my best not to let it mix, Irving said. As much as I could, but inevitably it did. I was unsure of when actually, or if actually the trade was going to happen, so it actually happened on set. You can only imagine what that reaction was to find out I had been traded, on set. I left for about five minutes, then I came back and started acting my scenes again.
True, there are many Southern California natives on hand James Harden, Klay Thompson and Paul George among them. But fans don’t care much about that. The real attraction is that the Lakers have designs to sign those players in free agency. By moving Jordan Clarkson and Slam Dunk Contest runner-up Larry Nance Jr. at the trade deadline, the Lakers have cleared space to sign two max-level free agents in the coming summers.
While Ball has incredible size for a point guard, he’s not the type of athlete who can blow by defenders off the dribble and plow through rim protectors in the paint. Throw a streaky jump shot into the mix, and it’s no wonder why he has spent most of this season in the record books for the wrong reasons.
With his basketball life in utter upheaval, Irving also put his personal life into upheaval in the service of Hollywood, waking up daily before sunrise, as early as 4 a.m., to get ready for his daily old-man makeover and the 14 hours of filming that followed. It was after reporting to the set for a day’s work in the final week of August that Irving finally got the call. The Cavs had worked out a deal. Irving would be heading for Boston.
It just happened to be shooting during one of the craziest summers of my life, Irving said on Friday, sitting in a conference room at the Hotel Bel-Air in LA to open All-Star weekend.
Indiana Pacers: Per Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports, Trevor Booker is slated to sign a minimum deal with the Pacers — once he clears waivers — for the remainder of the season. Booker never amounted to much for the 76ers, playing just 15.0 MPG in 33 games after being traded from Brooklyn for Jahlil Okafor, but his presence in Indiana’s short-handed frontcourt likely leads to a reduction in minutes for Thaddeus Young.
Fans across the league typically know that Gregg Popovich coaches the Spurs, Steve Kerr leads the Warriors and, all LeBron James jokes aside, Tyronn Lue is in charge of the Cavs. However, even the hardcore fans aren’t always abreast of the men that make those jobs much easier on a day-to-day basis. These assistant coaches are often the ones who run practice, do the scouting work on opponents or develop players on the current roster.
As the coaching carousel turns, some of these lesser-known names will get opportunities to run their own NBA teams.
In trading away Clarkson and Nance, the Lakers shed $14.8 million in salary ahead of the 2018-19 season. (Thomas and Frye are both on expiring contracts and unlikely to re-sign with the team this summer.) Additionally, if the Lakers choose not to re-sign restricted free agent Julius Randle after this year and stretch the final two years of Luol Deng’s contract, they will have plenty of room for multiple stars.
windhorst just made a great point: the cavs may have cleared cap space for the lakers that they could use to sign…yanno, lebron james.
He got his start in the NBA as a consultant to the Lakers in 2011. He returned to Europe, this time with CSKA Moskow from 2012-14, before flying back to the Spurs in 2014. He has been on the bench with Popovich ever since.
Fox News anchors have supported Trump’s campaign against NFL players kneeling for racial/social justice this season.
The James-Durant-Champion video for Uber gave Ingraham and Fox the opportunity for a rare triple play: They could bash James and ESPN while simultaneously defending Trump.
James has never hid his feelings about Trump, calling the president a bum on social media.
But Ingraham’s and Fox’s attack on James, one of the most politically outspoken players in the NBA, didn’t go over too well in the sports media world.
Another guy on Popovich’s staff that people are trying to poach is Messina, the lead assistant with the Spurs. The 58-year-old is the elder statesman on the list, but if you see him work with his players, you’d think he was much younger.
He has more energy than most of us players, Spurs guard Tony Parker said. He knows how to engage with guys and that’s very important. He is a joyful teacher.
Messina won four EuroLeague championships as a head coach and was named one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors in 2008. He was named the Italian League’s Best Coach in 1998, 2001 and 2005, as well as EuroLeague Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. He was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. In 17 seasons, his career head coaching record in the EuroLeague is 279-98 (.740 winning percentage).
While Ingraham wants James to shut up about politics, she had no problems with Tim Tebow (who appeared in an anti-abortion Super Bowl commercial), noted Justin Baragona of Mediate.
Columnist Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report tweeted that Ingraham’s comments were appalling.
Jemele Hill of ESPN’s The Undefeated was also offended.
LeBron is one of greatest examples of our country we’ve ever seen. He went from nothing to something. He had to be excellent at everything. To insinuate he’s not intelligent is appalling, she tweeted.
Sporting News spoke with players, coaches, scouts and general managers around the league to put together a list of top coaching candidates. (Only first-time coaching candidates are included, and it’s more of a scan of the landscape than a hardcore ranking.) The purpose is to make fans aware of some coaches that they’ll likely know in the next year or so.
We’ll make an exception for interim coaches, which leads us to our first candidate…
It turns out the Lakers were not willing to wait another year. They have their eyes set on the upcoming offseason — and on LeBron James and Paul George.
In order to have a chance of courting James and George, the Lakers needed to create the cap space to sign two max contract players in the offseason. They have been attempting to dump contracts that would have them handicapped in their pursuit of both future free agents.
Once Blake got here with CP3 [Chris Paul] and DeAndre [Jordan] we became a franchise that was talked about, Rivers said. Blake is responsible for all of that.
Griffin’s time in a Clippers uniform will be seen as the most successful and exciting era in the history of the Clippers organization, but it will also be looked at as a major disappointment. The failure to reach a Western Conference finals series and fulfill the potential of a star-laden team will leave a bitter taste behind.
With his ball-handling skills and his passing ability. He plays above the rim; I never could do that, Johnson said. But in his understanding of the game, his basketball IQ, his creativity of shots for his teammates. That’s where we [have the] same thing. Can bring it down, make a pass, make a play. I’m just happy he’s starting in the All-Star game because he deserves that.
And he’s going to be like an MVP, a champion, this dude he’s going to put Milwaukee on the map. And I think he’s going to bring them a championship one day.
At this point, you might be asking yourself, wait, how is that worth $50,000? But this fine might not be the most ridiculous of its kind.
The Eagles need to start looking at moving on from Jason Peters. Kicking Lane Johnson to the left side and/or looking for a plug-and-play left tackle to keep Carson Wentz upright is a must. Jones is underrated and can do that for the Eagles.
Miami Heat: The minutes reduction for Hassan Whiteside lowers his fantasy ceiling and prevents him from going off for monster games like he once put up regularly, but he is still finding a way to be productive when on the court. In his past five games, the big man has played only 26.8 MPG, yet he has still managed double-doubles in each of those contests while averaging 14.6 PPG and 13.4 RPG.
Milwaukee Bucks: Not only does Giannis Antetokounmpo do it all on the court — except shoot the 3-ball, that is — but his fantasy value is also boosted even more due to the amount of time he’s out there. The Greek Freak’s 37.0 MPG this season is tied with LeBron James for second in the league behind only Minnesota’s Jimmy Butler (37.3), and the addition of Jabari Parker to the lineup hasn’t reduced the work load at all for Antetokounmpo.
These players are the latest to join a history of late-season free agent acquisitions made by playoff and title contenders. Though some have been misses (Andrew Bynum and Deron Williams), there are a number of free agents signed after the deadline that have made important contributions to their teams.
Most fans would not consider adding a veteran of 10-plus years to be a splash they would be correct, but history suggests that sometimes a ripple is all a contending team needs to make. Let’s take a look at some of the more impactful late-season signings since 2008.
Just to seal the deal though, Wade had to do what he does best for the Heat: help his team bring home a win. The 36-year-old guard may have scored just three points in 22 minutes, but his block on Eric Bledsoe up four with less than 35 seconds to go could not have been sweeter for Wade or the fans who love him so much.
Rockets center Clint Capela just keeps on truckin’. The 23-year-old center had 23 points, 25 rebounds and two blocks in Houston’s 130-104 win over the Nuggets.
The Pacers tallied a 97-91 upset over the Celtics and a big reason was Victor Oladipo. The former Indiana Hoosier scored 35 points with 10 rebounds and five steals.
Richardson rushed for 950 yards and 11 TDs as rookie, then was part of a blockbuster deal with the Colts in his second season. Unfortunately, Richardson’s career never took off. He’s been on the practice squads of Oakland and Baltimore the past two seasons.
Indiana Pacers: Darren Collison (knee) isn’t quite ready to return to the court as he works his way back from getting his left knee scoped. He is at least another week away, per Pacers reporter Scott Agness, which means at least three more games for Cory Joseph to handle the starting point guard duties in Indiana.
Los Angeles Clippers: Doc Rivers said Wednesday that Avery Bradley has a 50/50 chance to play against the Warriors on Thursday due to a groin injury, and he said that the nagging injury could make Bradley a game-time decision for every game remaining on the schedule. This wasn’t what the Clippers were hoping for when they acquired Bradley in the Blake Griffin trade, obviously, and it probably makes Bradley too big of a risk to hold on to in standard 12-team leagues.
