On June 26, 2013, the nation awoke to the sight of a star player on one of the NFL’s model franchises being escorted out of his house by police, a T-shirt pulled over his cuffed wrists. New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was charged later that day with the murder of Odin Lloyd, whose body had been found six days earlier near Hernandez’s home.
Since that day, before he was found dead in his prison cell on April 19, 2017, Hernandez was charged with two previous murders and implicated in the shootings of three other people in two separate incidents dating back to his college days.
Cowboys tight end Jason Witten caught 10 passes for 97 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos. But the 10-time Pro Bowler set a Cowboys record just by lining up Sunday. He played in his 225th game as a member of the Cowboys, breaking the team record set by former defensive end Ed Too Tall Jones. Witten also tied former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin with his 65th career touchdown and moved into fourth place all-time on the NFL’s receptions list.
The Browns lost again Sunday, but Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas reached a milestone by playing 10,000 consecutive snaps in his 162nd straight game. Thomas, now in his 11th NFL season, has never missed a snap over his career.
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates caught a 7-yard touchdown pass in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Dolphins to break a tie with Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdowns by a tight end in NFL history. Gates, who also surpassed 900 receptions for his career, now has 112 touchdowns.
